The Contrast of Two Rivers – So Close Yet So Far

The Contrast of Two Rivers – So Close Yet So Far

From Darwin to Broome: The Mighty Ord and Fitzroy Rivers

Over the Christmas holiday break for 2023 I went on an adventure to see the mighty Ord and Fitzroy Rivers! Nothing I write or post as photos or videos can capture the beauty of this part of Australia. You just have to go there and see it for yourself! Yes I know that is a bit ironic given I have made this post but I want to post this online so people can appreciate this area of Australia.

I've wanted to visit this region ever since I did my 2010 research on the 1964 proposal to build the Fitzroy River scheme. The 2023 flood following Cyclone Ellie just pushed me to go there.

Originally, I had planned, after the Kimberley leg, to drive from Broome to Karratha, Karratha to Carnarvon - to visit the Space Museum there - then Carnarvon to Perth. But that was too much for financial reasons. So I changed those plans before I left. Then I wanted to go to Tom Price to make the locals aware about the Australian Citizens Party's campaign for a post office bank, and the Senate inquiry hearing on March 13 2024 in Tom Price on regional bank branch closures.

But once I got to Broome, I had enough of driving. Of course, driving in an air-conditioned vehicle was a good way to keep out of the heat, in the 'wet season', and the day-time temperatures in Kununurra and Fitzroy Crossing were 45 degrees celsius!

But this was a holiday, not a marathon, so what better way to spend holiday time than in Broome where the minimum temperature was 27 degrees, the maximum was 33 or 34, compared to Melbourne which was getting lots of rain and 22 degrees or cooler.

Rather than making a long blog post, I will tell the story in a few parts, because this will be long!

I'll post one picture which shows the contrast. The Fitzroy River at Fitzroy Crossing in December 2023, then in January 2024 after heavy rain fell:
